Sony News: Japan's Sony generates power from paper
Posted by claudio on Sunday, December 18, 2011 @ 22:24:41 CST (1062 reads)
Sony News Japanese electronics giant Sony on Thursday revealed technology that generates electricity from shredded paper.

As an environmental products fair opened in Tokyo, Sony invited children to put paper into a mixture of water and enzymes, shake it up and wait for a few minutes to see the liquid become a source of electricity, powering a small fan.

"This is the same mechanism with which termites eat wood to get energy," said Chisato Kitsukawa, a public relations manager at Sony.

Sony PS 3: Sony Playstation 3D Display Bundle Down to $300
Posted by claudio on Sunday, December 18, 2011 @ 22:22:48 CST (919 reads)
Sony Playstation 3 Companies seem to be learning that price is important this year. We’ve seen the Logitech Revue drop, Blackberry Playbook, HP Touchpad and now the Sony Playstation 3D tv. To be perfectly fair it was a good idea, but the price was too high or the tv was too small to capture any real market. This caused the device to drop for black friday, though it seems the trend is going to continue.

Sony PSP: Sony's PlayStation Vita hits stores in Japan
Posted by claudio on Sunday, December 18, 2011 @ 22:17:47 CST (675 reads)
Sony PSP Sony's long-awaited PlayStation Vita portable game machine hit stores in Japan this weekend as thousands of game enthusiasts lined up to be among the first to buy it.

Sony Computer Entertainment is predicting brisk sales, even though the launch may have missed some holiday shoppers. A successful debut would help the company offset the rest of its struggling business. Sony projects a loss of more than $1 billion for the fiscal year through March 2012, which would be its fourth straight annual loss.

Sony News: Transforming the TV with a $65,000 Plasma
Posted by claudio on Sunday, September 25, 2011 @ 01:46:17 CDT (1917 reads)
Sony News When you’re ready to build that home theater you’ve always dreamed about, I have the perfect television centerpiece. Panasonic’s high-definition HD plasma TV checks in with a 103-inch diagonal image.

The TV was the big attraction in Panasonic’s booth last week at CEDIA, the annual trade show in Indianapolis for home-theater designers and installers. The TV will display 3D video from Blu-ray discs or other sources. It weighs about 400 pounds and comes with a $65,000 price tag.

Too steep for your budget? Sony showed a new video projector coming in December that will cost a mere $25,000. It can display a picture that’s about twice the size of the Panasonic TV.

Sony PS 3: Sony’s External Battery for PlayStation Vita is Genius, a Real Game Changer
Posted by claudio on Sunday, September 25, 2011 @ 01:42:26 CDT (1490 reads)
Sony Playstation PS One So a bunch of us were out to dinner when Ryan from IGN checks his phone and declares, “Huh. So I guess the Vita has an external battery pack.” Everyone in our little clan agreed that this was a great move. We all chimed in our differently worded agreements before about two seconds of solid silence. I broke this with the reality check, “People are gonna be pissed,” which was met with another chorus of agreements, this time muffled by the sounds of palms on everyone’s faces.

The amount of Vita hype from consumers and media alike is already a good sign for Vita; it’s months away from launch, but the general consensus in the gaming world is that things in the present are looking good. Some, however, have taken issue with the battery life being three to five hours.

Sony News: FBI Arrests Hackers in Sony Breach
Posted by claudio on Sunday, September 25, 2011 @ 01:39:43 CDT (1537 reads)
Sony News The U.S. government arrested several hackers who now face lengthy prison terms in connection with Sony's data breaches.

The FBI arrested Cody Kretsinger, 23 of Phoenix, Ariz., Christopher Doyon, 47, of Mountain View, Calif., and Joshua Covelli, 26, of Fairborn, Ohio, demonstrating the government's seriousness about pursuing and capturing those who infiltrate high-profile computer systems.

All three, who are members of hacktivist collectives Anonymous or LulzSec, face charges of intentionally damaging protected computers and could see up to 15 years in prison if convicted.

Sony News: Sony redesigns PlayStation Home as a social gaming hub
Posted by claudio on Sunday, September 25, 2011 @ 01:36:06 CDT (1443 reads)
Sony News Sony is showing off a major redesign of PlayStation Home. The site originally launched in 2008 as a virtual world and is now becoming a hub for social gaming.

The redesign is aimed at jumping on the big trend in online games: social games with free-to-play business models, where users play for free and pay real money for virtual goods. This is the kind of gamble that Sony needs to make in order to hang on to its 23 million registered users at a time when social networks and mobile phones are stealing consumers’ attention.

The core of Home will be a Hub (pictured at top) where you can socialize with friends and immediately find game-related activities to do, director of PlayStation Home, Jack Buser (pictured), told VentureBeat. Sony has a closed beta test for the new Home right now and hopes to widen it soon.
